Scale is what defines Shiga Kogen Ski Resort.
Rather than a single resort, Shiga is a network of interconnected ski areas spread across a high plateau inside a national park. It’s the largest ski area in Japan, and the sense of space is noticeable from the first lift.
Altitude plays a big role here. Many of the ski zones sit higher than neighbouring Nagano resorts, which means colder temperatures and a longer season.

While lower resorts occasionally saw milder spells, Shiga’s upper areas held their snow well, and the pistes stayed in good condition for much of the season. When storms moved through, the snowfall refreshed the slopes quickly.
Shiga isn’t usually where people go for nightlife or a busy resort atmosphere.
What it offers instead is range. Long cruising runs, varied terrain, and the ability to ski for days without repeating the same routes.
For travellers who care about time on the mountain more than resort buzz, that balance can be surprisingly satisfying.
